Whitehaven Squash Club ended a remarkable season by comfortably beating league rivals Carlisle B in the premier county cup final.

The final, held at Windscale Squash Club, started in surprising fashion as Carlisle turned up with only four players. Whitehaven therefore had a 1-0 lead without a ball being hit, Daniel Cronin (Whitehaven’s number 5) with the forfeited match. At number 4, Owen Barrett effortlessly beat his aging opponent to put Whitehaven 2-0 up. The Cup was secured by Chris Clark at number 3 as he too recorded an easy 3-0 win. The Cup was safe and staying in West Cumbria, yet Whitehaven were keen to show their domination as both Mitchell Parr (No 2) and Gavin Stephenson (No 1) also completed 3-0 victories for the Haven team. The final score: 5-0; 15-0 in game scores.

This success rode on the back of a similar success a week previously when Whitehaven also secured the Cumbria Premier League title with a win against the same team. The West Cumbrians needed to win by 8 points or more to ensure the title came back to Whitehaven. The team came out triumphant with a win of 17-8. The team can put the title down to a positive post-Christmas run in, with the team dropping only 13 points out of a possible 140. A huge part of team’s success was based on the achievement of young star Daniel Harrison who was unbeaten throughout the whole season: a fantastic achievement for the 16 year old. This was recognised by Cumbria Squash and racketball committee as they awarded him the prestigious player of the year award.

The club were also very proud of the number of senior county representatives they had, with Mike Lowrey, Owen Barrett, Daniel Harrison and Daniel Cronin traveling as far down as Warwickshire for the men’s county team.

The club hopes that they can build on the success of this season as the team have been granted automatic qualification for next season’s National club championship.

If anybody wishes to start playing Squash, Whitehaven Squash club run a club nights at Whitehaven Sport Centre every Sunday night at 6pm and Tuesdays at 7.30pm.
